How Might Skill Trek fit into your family’s schedule?
The creators of Skill Trek have a large family including children with special needs, so they needed something that was simple and easy to implement. Understanding that every family is unique, feel free to make Skill Trek work to meet your needs.
Here are a couple of examples reported from different families:
Skill Trek Night
Sunday evening is designated as Skill Trek Night!
As the family prepares for Monday morning, the children look forward to learning about their new skill, reporting how they’re doing with their current skill, and ask any questions they may have.
One by one, the children visit with a parent (it takes about 5 minutes per child) and they:
- review the skill they’re working on
- submit their image into the Hall of Fame (if they’ve opted in)
- receive their new skill
After reviewing the new skill, the child and parent formulate a plan for the week, and then the next child reports to the parent until all children have their assignments.
While we mention ages in the following video, these are only examples as to how Skill Trek might look in a home with children working through each level.
Skill Trek Mornings (Rotations)
Each morning, one child meets with mom or dad to discuss their current skill and moving forward. The biggest difference here is that one child meets with a parent on each day of the week.
- The oldest teen may meet with dad on Monday mornings.
- The pre-teen may meet with mom on Tuesday mornings.
- And so forth.
Each meeting includes the following:
- review the skill they’re working on
- submit their image into the Hall of Fame (if they’ve opted in)
- receive their new skill
After reviewing the new skill, the child and parent formulate a plan for the week, and they will gather again a week later.
