There is a whole exciting world out there to see. Places to go, people to see, fun to be had. But you know what puts a damper on things in a hurry? When someone needs to use the bathroom as soon as you get there. Maybe even before you get there.
It’s important to learn that using the bathroom before leaving is a good idea for everyone.Whenever you go out of the house, you need to try to use your time well. We think this is a lesson our kids know but if you don’t teach it how could they?
Anytime you are leaving, have everyone go to the bathroom. Every single time. This is how everyone gets into the habit of going so you don’t have to stop while en route. One time, we had just gotten on the highway for our Homeschool Road Trip when we had to stop at the very first rest area. To say I was not happy would be an understatement.
Another good thing to consider, and this means teaching our children to think about things a little ahead, as well as show them when it’s important NOT to grab a big drink. Teach everyone how to monitor their liquid intake to coincide with restroom availability.
Finally, remind them upon arrival, for instance at a movie or church, that it disturbs everyone if they need to get up and use the bathroom. Wait until the movie or service has ended before going to the restroom. Make a big deal about it when your child does it successfully.
