Start ASAP
The sooner you start, the better off you’ll be. Your kids need to know ASAP how they should use their manners. Start with please and thank you! These are two of the most important manners every child should know. From there, you can teach things like-
- Personal space
- Taking turns
- Speaking kindly
- Listening the first time
Gentle reminders are okay
It’s natural to want to get upset if your children are using their manners. However, a gentle reminder is more than okay. You don’t have to get upset when your child doesn’t say “thank you.” Just gently remind them to use their manners. It makes no sense to yell at your child when trying to teach your kids manners. Stay calm! If they don’t do well by being reminded, place reminders in your home. You can make a list of the “top ten” manners to use.
Use manners yourself
As hard as it can be to remember your own manners, this is one of the most important things you can do in teaching your kids. You’re teaching your children how to treat others. If they hear you saying please and thank you often, they’re going to use it. How you treat the people around you is how your kids will treat others too. Being kind and polite really does go a long way. Modeling proper manners is a great way to help your kids learn manners.
Sign your kids up for a manners class
Yes, they have manners classes for elementary aged kids. Go ahead and sign your kids up! Your kids may not learn well from you, but they can learn well from others. You’d be surprised as to how much your child can learn from a manners class.
