Susie reached across the table for the serving bowl, calling out, “Give me it!” She jerked it out of her grandmother’s hands and shouted “mine!”
Her mother scolded her, a horrified look on her face. She had tried to raise her daughter to be thoughtful and considerate. Susie should have known better than to act like that at the dinner table, and with company over, too.
Have you ever been there?
Not only that, it can also be stressful for you and your child. When they don’t have proper manners, they may not understand the response they get from their peers, or from other people. They might not understand why they can’t get along with friends, or why they get in trouble at school, but there’s more to it than just that.
To understand this, we need to understand why good manners are important. Good manners are all about self-respect and respect for others. Good manners show you care about the sensibilities of others. Saying thank you can make a person feel appreciated. Saying please shows you respect the other person’s right to choose to do it or not.
You are doing your children a big favor when you teach them manners. You will give them confidence that they need to make it through the world. When considering why manners are so important, you need to look at the big picture. Think of how this will affect your child in the future.
